Richard Christopher Porter was born in Darlington, County Durham in December 1960. The proud son of Professor Brian and Pauline Porter who have been exemplary parents in every way. Also, a sibling of Cathy Dean, a graduate of Collingwood College, Durham and Doctor (in Archeology) of Oxford, and Alison Manganas, who has spent much of her life bringing up her family on the beautiful island of Crete. Richard moved to Cheshire in 1967 and spent his formative years at the King’s School in Macclesfield.

Whilst at school, Richard demonstrated a natural ability in mathematics from an early age and decided, despite wise counsel from his father, to pursue a career in agriculture at the Lancashire College of Agriculture (up near Preston). Richard soon realised that his father was probably right and moved swiftly (i.e. two years after completing his “A” levels) to read Computing Science at Staffordshire University, where he attained a 1st Class Honours Degree in Computing Science.

After a number of “starter” jobs, Richard attended an interview with a firm called Spicer & Pegler (Sporting two black eyes and a broken nose following a rugby match the previous Saturday) and joined the Firm in 1987 as a consultant in the IT Consulting division. Spicer and Pegler subsequently merged with Touche Ross, which in turn merged with Deloitte Haskins and Sells to form Deloitte and Touche.

It was at this point (in 1995) that work became challenging, so Richard left Deloitte to become the CIO of a major retail business in Leicester. He led a major outsourcing project and returned to Deloitte after that was done in 1997. He was admitted to the partnership of Deloitte in 1999 and has worked on numerous fascinating projects in both the private and public sector over the intervening years.

In his private life, Richard is a very proud father of Rebecca and Sam, and is engaged to his fiancee Vanessa who has a young daughter, Georgie.

Richard enjoys good quality wine, sails boats of all varieties, is treasurer of Trearddur Bay Sailing Club, is Commodore of Deloitte’s Sailing Club, is a Member of The Royal Thames Yacht Club and is passionate about cycling. George Rhys of Southwick Court Fine Wines has been instrumental in his appreciation of fine wine.

Richard currently lives in Notting Hill and has a family home in Trearddur Bay, Anglesey,

This blog seeks to portray personal perspectives of life as a sailor, as a cyclist and as someone who appreciates good wine. I hope the missives that I post over the coming months are of interest.
